Quick and Easy SEO Guide for Print on Demand Companies

by Gooten Editorial Team on Feb. 24, 2022

No matter your industry, it’s critically important that your business can be “seen” by search engine users. Search engines like Google represent the primary way in which consumers seek information about different products and services, and if you’re not making an effort to connect with these consumers, your business is almost sure to suffer.

Print on demand companies are not exempt from any of this. In fact, as the print on demand industry expands, dominance on the search engine results page has become more and more competitive. Fortunately, you don’t have to have a black belt in SEO (search engine optimization) to establish a highly visible online presence, making it easy for your printon demand store to be “found” via organic search.

What Should Print on Demand Companies Know About SEO?

Here are a few quick and easy tips to get your SEO efforts up and running.

1. Know your keywords.

Keywords represent the terms or phrases your consumers are using to locate products. This may be as simple as “print on demand T-shirts” or “make your own sweatshirt.” It’s important to identify keywords that you can naturally incorporate into your online copy, including your product descriptions. Some ways to find good keywords:

  • Visit your competitor websites and see which words or phrases stand out
  • Use Google AutoComplete for some prompts and suggestions
  • Create a Google Analytics account (it’s free!) and use the keyword research tool (it’s easy!)

Make a list of three to five keywords to start with.

2. Write good copy.

For SEO success, you’ll need to write strong copy for your product descriptions/collections. This means naturally working in some of those keywords; don’t try to force them but do find ways to employ them in a way that’s logical and easy-to-read. Beyond that, ensure you have as much strong detail as possible about your products.
What Google really wants is to provide users with relevant and compelling content that answers their questions and meets their needs. If you can produce that type of copy, it’s bound to help you achieve SEO traction.

3. Don't forget the meta text.

In addition to your product copy, it’s also important to draft good meta titles and meta descriptions. These two pieces of copy are often used in your search engine listings and help clue in Google as to what your content is all about.

A meta title should be no more than 50-60 characters. Use it to summarize the main theme or product you’re highlighting on the page. Include a keyword when you can!

Meta descriptions should be 150-160 characters. Include a basic summary of the page, a keyword, and a call to action.

4. Optimize images.

Print on demand companies often experience the best SEO results in Google Image search. Take advantage of this by optimizing all of the images on your page, writing a brief “alt text” description for each.

Again, if you can use a keyword here, that’s ideal!

5. Get links and citations.

A final tip for print on demand companies looking to boost their Google visibility: Try to accrue some links back to your website. This signals to Google that your site has provided real value to other people, which can help boost your authority in the search rankings.

The simplest way to do this is to get citations from business directories; most of these sites will allow you to complete a profile and get a listing for little or no cost. Make sure Google Business Profiles is at the top of your list.

In some cases, press releases can also be a helpful way to get links, though this is a little pricier. Consider it an intermediate step in your SEO journey.
