FAQs
DTF stands for Direct-to-Film. Instead of printing ink directly onto fabric like DTG does, DTF involves printing your design onto a special film, applying a hot-melt adhesive powder, and then heat-transferring the finished film onto the garment. The result is a vibrant, highly durable print with a slightly raised texture. DTF handles fine details and multi-color designs extremely well, and one of its biggest advantages is that it works on virtually any fabric type, not just cotton-heavy blends.
This is where DTF really stands out. Unlike DTG, which performs best on high-cotton garments, DTF transfers adhere to cotton, polyester, nylon, denim, canvas, and blended fabrics with consistent results. That opens up the product range considerably. Styles like the C2 Sport 5100 Unisex Poly Crew Neck Tee and the Paragon 200 Men’s Islander Performance T-Shirt are good examples of garments that work well with DTF but would be harder to print on with DTG.
The DTF catalog covers a solid range of cuts and fits. You’ll find bestselling unisex crew necks like the Bella + Canvas 3001, Next Level 3600, and Gildan 5000, as well as triblend options like the Bella + Canvas 3413C and 3415. For women’s specific styles, there are the Bella + Canvas 8882 Women’s Flowy Crop Tee, Next Level 5080 Women’s Festival Crop Top, and Next Level 6760 Women’s Triblend Dolman Scoop Neck Tee. Performance, crop, scoop neck, and V-neck styles are all represented.
For some use cases, yes. DTF tends to produce stronger color vibrancy on darker garments without the same underbase limitations that DTG has. Designs with sharp edges, high contrast, and bold color blocking look particularly clean with DTF. It’s also a better choice for printing on stretchy or synthetic fabrics where DTG ink may crack or not bond as reliably. For photo-realistic prints on soft cotton tees, DTG is still competitive, but DTF is the more flexible option across different garment types.
DTF prints are known for good wash durability. The adhesive layer bonds strongly to the fabric during heat transfer, and when cured correctly, the print resists peeling and fading through regular washing cycles. As with any printed garment, following care instructions matters. Washing inside out in cold water and avoiding high-heat drying will significantly extend the life of a DTF print.
Yes, and without the same complications as DTG. Since DTF involves transferring a pre-printed film rather than spraying ink directly onto fabric, the white base is already built into the transfer itself. That means you don’t need a separate underbase step for dark garments. Colors like Black, Navy, Charcoal, Military Green, Burgundy, and Deep Royal all come out with strong, accurate color representation using DTF.
The range is very wide. The DTF collection spans hundreds of color options across all available styles, from basics like White, Black, Natural, and Ash Grey, through mid-tones like Military Green, Navy, Royal Blue, Forest Green, Maroon, and Teal, to accent colors like Coral Silk, Lavender, Turquoise, Safety Orange, Neon Pink, and Vintage Black. Whatever color palette your brand or niche works with, there’s almost certainly something in the catalog that fits.
The DTF lineup includes Bella + Canvas, Next Level, Gildan, Comfort Colors, and C2 Sport, along with Paragon. Bella + Canvas and Next Level cover most of the fashion-forward and retail-quality territory, Gildan and Comfort Colors handle volume-friendly and garment-dye options, and C2 Sport and Paragon cover performance and athletic wear where DTF’s fabric versatility really helps.
Yes. The DTF collection includes several women’s-specific and fashion-forward styles, including the Bella + Canvas 8882 Women’s Flowy Crop Tee, the Next Level 5080 Women’s Festival Crop Top, and the Next Level 6760 Women’s Triblend Dolman Scoop Neck Tee. These styles are particularly popular in lifestyle, streetwear, and festival fashion niches, where DTF’s versatility on different fabric weights is a practical advantage.
